She’s brave, caring and stubborn and she would fight to the death for every single person she loves. But she soon finds out that one of her losses is not as permanent as she thought.Įelyn is far from being perfect but I couldn’t help but empathise with her. She thinks only of surviving so she can avenge her beloved mother and brother. These two events changed her life and shaped who she is and how she acts. The main character, Eelyn, is a fierce young warrior, with a painful past: she lost her brother in the battlefield and her mother during a raid from an enemy tribe. Sky in the Deep is inspired by Norse Mythology and the Vikings’ way of life.

If, however, you’re into badass Viking warriors fighting each other, go for it. If you’re uncomfortable reading about violence, blood and gore, this is not the ideal book for you. Sky in the Deep is Adrienne Young’s, believe it or not, debut novel and it is not for the faint-hearted. I DON’T WANT TO MOVE ON FROM SKY IN THE DEEP (he shouts at his screen) It’s the same feeling as when you accomplish a goal and feel really great for having achieved what you wanted to do for so long but now that you’ve done it, you have to move on. This book has been on my tbr list since the day its publication was announced in the US (and that was a long time ago.) Now that I’ve finally had the chance to read it, just a few days before it was published in the UK, I feel like I’ve lost and gained something at the same time. Sky in the Deep is such a roller coaster of emotions I’m still dizzy – but ready for another ride. Driven by a love for her clan and her growing love for Fiske, Eelyn must confront her own definition of loyalty and family while daring to put her faith in the people she’s spent her life hating. They must do the impossible: unite the clans to fight together, or risk being slaughtered one by one. She is given no choice but to trust Fiske, her brother’s friend, who sees her as a threat. But when the Riki village is raided by a ruthless clan thought to be a legend, Eelyn is even more desperate to get back to her beloved family. Until the day she sees the impossible on the battlefield - her brother, fighting with the enemy - the brother she watched die five years ago.įaced with her brother’s betrayal, she must survive the winter in the mountains with the Riki, in a village where every neighbour is an enemy, every battle scar possibly one she delivered. Her life is brutal but simple: fight and survive. Raised to be a warrior, seventeen-year-old Eelyn fights alongside her Aska clansmen in an ancient rivalry against the Riki clan.
